VILLAJOYOSA – Costa Blanca
Villajoyosa has something special that makes all those who visit want to return. The configuration of the old town, with its small streets reminiscent of the past, and its houses close to the port painted in pure Mediterranean style in bright luminous colours are a big attraction for tourists. Villajoyosa has the advantage of an excellent climate that makes this Costa Blanca region a recommended destination any time of the year
The image of Villajoyosa as a fishing village with its multicolour facades and a busy fishing port is complemented by several excellent beaches that stretch along 3.5km both bays and inlets, with calm and crystal clear waters. Two small sand and gravel inlets provide sheltered areas for those who want to learn to windsurf and are perfect for diving. The centre beach runs parallel to the promenade and is a fine sandy beach with full facilities, sports areas and playgrounds for children. The perfect way to end a leisure day in Villajoyosa is to visit the gaming rooms and shows at the famous Costa Blanca Casino
Villajoyosa means "joyful" and this very popular Costa Blanca City is situated at the mouth of the Sella River, the lower part of the town surprises every visitor with its beautiful facades painted in vibrant colours. With its numerous restaurants, wonderful market place, the older town has been declared a historic monument where you can find various remains of the Roman period and is at the heart of Villajoyosa. No wonder it is the main town of the La Marina Region in the Costa Blanca!
It’s multicoloured facades, whose purpose was to ensure that sailors could see their houses from afar, and narrow streets seem to draw you in and invite you to discover the beauty of this recently restored village. The old walled town centre is a good place to stop and wander about.
Villajoyosa’s economy depends both on shallow and deep sea fishing, there is a fishing harbour and the local restaurants serve up some of the best seafood on the Costa Blanca. Apart from the paella, Villajoyosa has a full range of local rice and fish dishes. The salted fish is very famous but don't forget to sample Villajoyosa's famous turrón and chocolate. The town's relationship with the sea has been a determining factor in its history and culture and Villajoyosa's overseas trade has produced this typical industry of chocolate.
Villajoyosa celebrates the most important festival, the Moors and Christians from the 24th - 31st of July filled with music, dance and costumes, with fireworks and sumptuous foods served to everyone. It has been celebrated for over 250 years and begins with the extraordinary parade of the Moors and Christians on the 25th and 26th of July. On the dawn of the 28th they carry out a spectacular disembarkation and by five o'clock in the morning the people begin to arrive at the beach. While the Christians prepare their defence, over 30 Muslim boats arrive closer to the coast. After taking the land, both armies fight until they reach the foot of the castle.
Villajoyosa Beaches
Centro Beach: located in the town centre in Villajoyosa with an important extension of fine sand and light sand, a beautiful waterfront full of palm trees and accessable for people with reduced mobility. This beach is over 1km of length and is not far from Benidorm but much less occupied
Paradís Beach: is an open beach, keeping its natural environment with golden sand and gravel areas. Palm trees shape the environment of this easy accessible beach and during the summer you can enjoy a beverage or food in one of the chirinquitos (beach bars).
Bon Nou Beach: is a beautiful rustic cove with crystal clear waters, sand and stones where quietness reigns usually. Located between two big rocks its swell is minimal. This beach has recently been modified so it provides easy access
La Caleta, a leafy palm vegetation background is the landscape surrounding this isolated stone creek, with quiet ambience and located in the middle of a natural environment.
Del Torres, rustic cove with gravel and located near a camping where you can enjoy a drink. During the summer there is also a beach bar with easy access.
Varadero Estudiantes Beach this beach is situated in a built up area next to the fishing port of Villajoyosa and gas both pedestrian and vehicular access. It remains a rustic beach in a nearly untouched environment.
Raco del Conill - a small quiet creek of great beauty, it is set in the mountains which makes access very difficult. It is perfect for fishing and diving as well as nude bathinh. Amonst the people this bay is called the Bounty Beach and there is an unwritten rule that you don't disturbe anyone who lies at the beach before your arrival.
Xarco Beach this quiet beach is located the most southern of Villajoyosa coast in the area of Tossal del Mar. It is suitable for fishing and diving and has two accesses from the main road N332.
L’Esparrello is a small creek of clear waters located at the foot of a cliff nearly 2km from the urban centre of Villajoyosa towards Alicante. This peaceful spot is perfect for fishing and diving and is suitable for nude bathing.
