The capital city of Mao (Mahon) is at the eastern end of the island. Ferries from the Spanish mainland and Palma de Mallorca arrive regularly at the Port of Mahon. The main road runs through the middle of the island leading to Ciutadella (Menorca's second largest town), with secondary roads leading off to the North and South to various resorts and beaches. Temperatures in Menorca usually rise to around 30 degrees in July and August and fall to 14 degrees in January.


Menorca offers plenty of long golden beaches. Serious water-sports enthusiasts should consider a trip to S'Algar in the south-eastern corner of the island. Sun worshippers might consider Son Bou and Santo Tomas, or the child friendly Cala Galdana. Indeed, Son Bou boasts the longest beach in Menorca - nearly 3km long Fornells, is an ancient fishing village set in a natural harbour, and is famous for its seafood restaurants, featuring the local speciality of 'caldereta de llangosta'. It's reported that King Juan Carlos of Spain visits every year to sample this culinary delight.


Menorcan island cooking relies heavily on seafood and it is common to see a wide variety of fish dishes on the menu. Other tastes are catered for extremely well and most restaurants offer a wide choice meats together with pizza and pasta choices. Most restaurants are child friendly, offering children's menus.


Do not miss visiting the market in Ferreries. You will find locally produced fruit and vegetables, cakes of Arabic origin, crafts made in pottery and basketry. For a small amount of money you can buy plants or flowers. All accompanied by local folk dances, which give a touch of joy and atmosphere to the market
