Costa Tropical PropertyAlthough not nearly so well known as the neighbouring Costa del Sol to the west, the Costa Tropical of the Granada province is particularly picturesque and less crowded and offers the visitor a lovely sub-tropical climate. The coast line of the Costa Tropical is varied, often rugged cliffs with little coves and fishing villages whilst in other areas, wide open expanses of beach. Almenuca and La Herradura are the regions tourist capitals.

Many tourists head east where you can still find old the Spain with it small charming fishing villages and white mountain villages. This area is largely undeveloped with long beaches that are generally unpopulated except throughout July and August when Spanish visitors from the inland areas of Granada and Madrid holiday here.

Granada is a world famous city, dominated by the Alhambra and backed by Spain’s highest mountain range – the Sierra Nevada, and the valleys of Las Alpujarras. Originally a fortress, the Alhambra palace is now a magnificent tourist attraction of architectural splendour with beautiful gardens and numerous water features. The Alhambra is made up of many buildings, including the summer palace called Generalife and the magnificent Palace of Charles V which stand at its centre.

The Spanish who live in Granada will often take to the coast during July and August as temperatures average around 40 degrees in the summer, leaving the city unusually quiet. However as with any Spanish city, whatever time of year you visit, Granada is no exception and has a vibrant nightlife. Pedro Alarcón attracts a generally younger set of people to its bars and discos, whilst Plaza Nueva and the Calle Elvira has a more general offering of jazz, flamenco or bands.

La Alpujarra is an area of dramatic natural beauty with fertile valleys of almonds, olives, oranges and lemons, and cherry orchards. Home to mountain goats, wild boar, eagles, goshawks and partridge, this area is still untouched by tourism and it is not unusual to see sheep or goats in the village streets. La Alpujarra has long been a home for artists and writers, due to its tranquility and beauty.

The ski resort of the Sierra Nevada is the southernmost resort in Europe. Unlike many other European ski resorts, Sierra Nevada offers a choice and you are not restricted to a snowy outlook during the course of your holiday. A half an hour trip Granada, and you can sightsee or shop in the city, a little further on and you can be sunbathing on the beach.

Said to be the jewel of the Costa Tropical, the white village of Salobreña is worth a visit. Here you will be torn between visiting the Moorish castle at top of the old town, the beach, and the sugar cane plantations. Beneath the old town, lies the more recent developments where you will find modern apartments, bars and restaurants, a lively cultural scene and a variety of water sports.

Almuñecar is a coastal resort also popular with the Spanish, although many foreigners are now taking up residence here. Located between two rivers, the Rio Seco and the Rio Verde, the land is fertile and produces a variety of tropical fruit including chirimoya, mango, papaya and avocado.

La Herradura has unspoilt pretty coves and is located betwen the two attractive resorts of Punta de la Mona where you will find many luxury urbanisations, and Cerro Gordo where the coast is protected as a maritime reserve. Nearby in a protected cove is the Marina del Este yacht harbour. Water sports and scuba diving are popular here.
