The orange blossom coast is situated in the north of region of Valencia up to Tarragona. The capital is Castellon de La Plana which is university town - a mix of industrial and pleasant unspoilt countryside. The 14 municipalities of Valencia enjoy a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, although the temperatures on the Costa del Azahar are a few degrees lower than the costas to the south. Sea temperatures from May to November remain between 14C to18C and a number of beaches have natural lagoons where the water temperature is very warm.
At the heart of the Costa del Azahar, Valencia itself is one of the largest cities in Spain, and consists of the city area and a beautiful coastline. The city is full of history and culture, has one of the largest bullrings in Spain and celebrates many fiestas during the course of the year the most famous being the fallas, and the messiest being the La Tomatina in which people throw tomatoes at one another. Hotels in the town of Bunol where this strange festival takes place, are booked well in advance for this one, so if you would rather watch than participate book early. One of the busiest areas in Valencia is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the new centre of the city where you will also find abundant nightlife.
The unblemished, white sandy beaches and clear blue Mediterranean water makes this one of the most attractive destinations on the Valencian coast. From the port you can take the Golondrina boat for a pleasant ride to the lighthouse, or participate in all manner of water sports including waterskiing, windsurfing and sailing. Inland the close proximity of the Pyrenees Mountains adds skiing, mountain biking, hiking and white-water rafting to the activities list.
Inland villages such as Las Fuentes and Alcossebre are steeped in history and a charming attraction for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
The province of Castellσn boasts the second most mountainous region in Spain, making a spectacular backdrop to the carpets of citrus, olive, pear, pomegranate, almond, fig and carob trees.
The town of Sagunto is situated 25km north of Valencia, and has three main parts including the old town where there are still Roman ruins including an old theatre, the new industrial town, and the coastal region of Puerto Sagunto.
