The Costa Calida | Costa Calida Property

Costa CalidaStretching from San Pedro del Pinatar to Mazarron, the Costa Calida is the stretch of coast belonging to the province of Murcia.

There has been considerable interest in this area in recent years from native Spaniards & foreign nationals alike. This has mainly been concentrated on the Northern part of the Costa, dominated by the Mar Menor, which is separated from the sea by the La Manga strip, where the therapeutic waters are so warm that you can swim nearly all year round. Here you can now find established residential zones, in addition to sporting facilities and many new golf resorts such as the huge Polaris World developments.

Though there has been a sharp increase in the population of the northern half of the Costa, This has injected a cosmopolitan feel to the area, while retaining much of its community atmosphere & traditional culture. The Costa Calida is known for being inexpensive and having excellent beaches.

A great deal of investment has gone into the preservation of its historical & architectural heritage. There are many fiestas throughout its calendar, some of which are well worth a look. Plenty of shopping opportunities exist ranging from souvenirs, local goods & handicrafts, to fashion items & modern shopping centers.

The Costa Calida enjoys sunshine in excess of 320 days per year with temperatures rarely falling below 30°C (86°F). Winters are typically very mild with averages hovering around 18°C (64°F). Popular resorts include the salt-water lagoon of the Mar Menor which offers excellent water sports, and the up and coming Los Alcazares on its western shores, where you will find bars, restaurants and beaches overcrowded during the high tourist season.

This part of Spain is famous for its salt lakes. This has a major knock on effect on humidity levels, & as a result, the air is much dryer than in other parts of Spain & Europe. The low humidity levels coupled with a mild climate, mean the World Health Organization have rated this part of Spain one of the healthiest climates on the planet. The inland areas are almost desert like in appearance, and there are several towns which still preserve their original medieval structures.

Murcia

Murcia, the capital of the region, lies between Andalucia and Alicante, and now sports its own airport at San Javier. It is undoubtedly one of the richest provinces in Spain, as well as being one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country. However, it still remains one of the least exploited with its fertile plains, fruit trees, striking woodlands and white sandy beaches. Its two rivers, Segura Murdo & Sangonera irrigate the area, making ideal citrus fruit growing conditions. Murcia has its own university, around where you will find most of the cities nightlife, as well as a 15th century cathedral, de Santa Maria. The average temperature is 21° and has 320 sunny days per year.

Mazarron

Further down the coast 19km west of Cartegena and backed by the Sierra Espuna mountain range, is Mazarron, an ex-mining town, which consists of two parts - the old town and the port, Puerto del Mazarron. Offering a wealth of artistic heritage, and more than 35 kilometres of unspoilt beaches, coves and rocky sea beds makes it an ideal place for water sports fanatics – or a dip in the local mud baths. The widest and most popular beach in Mazarron is in the fishing village of Bolnuevo which is situated to the west of Puerto de Mazarron.

Cartegena

The ancient city of Cartegena is Spain’s second biggest, and is home to one the major ports of Spain as well as one of the largest naval bases in the country. The bay of Cartagena has approximately 50 docks, with millions of tonnes of varied cargo. Cartagena is a historical city, and offers beautiful old buildings and fine gardens to its many visitors. The Regatta Club offers sports, a swimming-pool, dining area and a shopping mall, and the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology displays pieces of naval architecture, and bits of treasure found locally over the years. Shopping and sightseeing in Cartegena should be done on foot, and everything is within walking distance - negotiating the roads in the main centre can often be difficult.
