Costa Almeria

Dominated by the Alcazaba on Calle Almanzor, the Costa Almeria is Andalucia’s most eastern province and is as beautiful and varied as any of the Spanish coasts. To the east of Almeria, you will find the rugged and un-spoilt coast of Cabo Del Gato-Nijar natural park, which is one of the least spoilt areas in the country. This area is predominantly popular with back-packers and nature lovers due to the sense of exploration found here with coves to be explored, which can only be reached on foot, very few villages and very low population.
The area is semi-desert, with many large expanses of rock and dry dusty parched land. Although Almeria has some beautiful beaches backed by high cliffs, the plastic greenhouses through the whole area make this stretch of coast rather unattractive. The two best known beaches are those of Playa de Los Genoveses which has sparkling clear shallow water, and Playa de Monsul where the sand is grey and the beaches are backed by volcanic rock
Many European western movies are filmed in the Costa Almeria due to its completely un-spoilt nature and peaceful atmosphere. Movies made here include; “fistful of dollars”, “for a few dollars more” and more famously “The good, the bad and the ugly”. Although the movie making days are past, the old movie sets and a new western theme park are there along with a full sized fort and ghost town. This region is classed as the only true desert in Europe.
The coastline of Almeria is rugged, along the entire coastline you will find defense towers dating from between the 16th and 18th Century as a defense system against the attack of pirates in the Mediterranean. One of these towers can be seen on the Playa Del Castillo de Macenas, if you follow the main coastal road, you can turn on to a dirt track where you can drive straight on to this beach. The beaches in this area are mostly pebble.
If you drive up into the town of Mojacar the atmosphere changes completely, you will find yourself reading English street signs and listening to English radio stations in your car, this town is utterly over-run with English tourists and real estate agencies with a nice golf course thrown in for good measure. Mojacar is split into two sections – the old town and the beaches, which until recently were largely unspoilt by tourists, however with the rising prices in Spanish property, Mojacar still offers property at reasonable prices – hence the increase in foreigners and tourism all over the Costa Almeria
