The Canary Islands | Canaries

The Canary IslandsConquered by the Spaniards in the 15th Century, the Canary Islands were originally named after the large dogs found living there, and are located off the coast of Africa approximately 100 miles west of the coast of Morocco.

Now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world - mostly due to the fact that each of the Canary Islands has a constant temperature throughout the year and splendid beaches of fine sand. The weather is dry and often windy, with year round temperatures near 72 degrees and little rainfall throughout the year. However the landscape of each island is fundamentally different to the others although long extinct volcanoes are scattered around most.

The Canary Islands consist of 4 large main holiday destination islands - Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Tenerife, plus 3 smaller ones La Palma, Gomera, and Hierro which are now becoming popular with tourists. There are also a couple of smaller ones as yet largely unvisited by holidaymakers.

The Teide volcano which is now a national park on Tenerife and which can be seen on a clear day from the coast of Africa, is the highest mountain in Spain, and the third largest volcano on Earth.

The Canary Islands rely on tourism and receive about 10 million tourists per year. December to March are the busiest months, when you will find a high level of tourism and busy beaches on all seven of the Islands which each have something different to offer:
